Our Providers are all Doctors of Audiology
There are two different types of providers that can provide general hearing care — Audiologists and Dispensers (also known as Dealers or Hearing Instrument Specialists). While both can dispense hearing aids, there are a number of differences between the two.
Hearing aid dispensers do not need a degree in Audiology. In fact, in some states, they don't need any college degree at all. They are allowed to provide hearing screenings, perform hearing tests and can fit hearing aids.
Audiologists, on the other hand, have an advanced degree in Audiology and are trained in a number of ear-related conditions. The most common degree for Audiologists is an "Au.D" degree, comprising of three years of didactic and clinical instruction and a one-year externship, similar to a medical residency. All of the providers at Advanced Hearing & Balance specialists are Doctors of Audiology and have earned the "Au.D" behind their name.
